Chlorinated couture

Sally, Alicia, Angie and Belinda.

The London Olympics are only weeks away and many of our athletes have already departed to finish their preparation in the European summer.

Every four years Aussie fans develop a sudden passion for sports like shooting, badminton and taekwondo, but there is always more than a fleeting interest in swimming.

Some of our greatest Olympians have made their name in the pool, and I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with four members of the squad we are sending to go for gold in London.

Alicia Coutts, Belinda Hocking, Angie Bainbridge and Sally Foster were my subjects for a swimming shoot with a difference.

They took time out from endless laps at the Australian Institute of Sport for a makeover and fashion shoot – showing fans they can strut their stuff just as well on the pool deck as in the water.

After Renee and Kirsten had taken care of hair and makeup, the girls were dressed in a range of apparel from Momento Dezigns, DeVine Goddess and Zu Shoes.

I then worked through two individual looks for each of the girls, before group shots in and out of the water, all taken in and around the same pool they train in every day.

One thing athletes are good at is following instruction, so we were able to deliver a diverse range of images in a relatively short time. The girls were awesome to work with, clearly enjoying being models for a day, and I think were pleased to be photographed in something other than a swimming costume.

They didn’t totally escape the pool though. Click here, here and here to see how these images appeared in print, or check out the story and slideshow on Fairfax Media.

And now, it’s time for a hot shower.

Nice work, big fella. The pic were they are silhouetted getting into the pool is my favorite. Keep up the good work.
